Background and Rationale
 

The course provides students with the basic principles of English phonetics and phonology, which are a useful tool in teaching and learning English pronunciation. The course introduces basic terminology used in the field preparing the students for future more in-depth study of the field at a higher level (e.g. MA courses in linguistics). Students are familiarised with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and principles of phonemic and phonetic speech transcription. A brief description of various accents of English is presented.

After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
 Describe the way English sounds are produced
 Describe the structure of English syllable
 Tell which clusters of sounds are allowed in English
 Describe and identify English stress, rhythm and intonation patterns
 Describe and identify speech processes in connected speech in English
 Transcribe speech using the IPA
 Name main phonological theories
 Identify basic features of some accents of English
