Course Description:
Background and Rationale
This course offers an introduction to developmental and acquired language disorders. Students will be acquainted with numerous language disorders that are either genetically bound such as Down Syndrome and Fragile X Syndrome, or they are caused after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Introduction to other language disorders such as Specific Language Impairment (SLI) will also be provided. Students attending this course will also be familiarized with the biological basis of language as well as some techniques used in classroom with children with developmental and acquired disorders. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to discuss issues related to child and adult language disorders, including causes, as well as define characteristics of language symptoms related to the disorders discussed in class. They will also be able to teach students with developmental and acquired disorders.
