Rationale
This course appeals to students who are intrigued by how languages express and shape identity, and in particular the way that English as an international language. It explores how globalisation both influences and is influenced by English, presenting fresh possibilities and challenges for people and societies worldwide. Being in a global community, identity creation through language is a means to self-discovery, creation of relations and builds learning blocks of cultures across the world. The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge of the impact of globalisation in the context of the English Language education.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Differentiate ESOL as a primary form of English language education.
(ii) Examine the role of English in the era of globalisation, and the way its spread presentsdilemmas for local societies.
(iii) Evaluate the role of personal identity and its relation to motivation to learn languageinside and outside institutions.
(iv) Analyse how national policy, local culture and institutional context can influence what and how languages are taught.
