Rationale


Sociology plays a crucial role in understanding health and healthcare. This course equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse the social determinants of health, critically examine health disparities, and develop culturally competent public health interventions.

The aim of this course, is to provide students with the skills necessary to critically analyse the social factors that influence health and healthcare, apply sociological concepts to contemporary public health challenges, and demonstrate the ability to navigate ethical dilemmas arising in the healthcare field.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Analyse the social determinants of health and healthcare access, explaining how social stratification impacts health outcomes.
(ii)   Compare the principles of bioethics and medical ethics, applying them to real-world scenarios.
(iii)  Evaluate the impact of legal frameworks on public health policy implementation, interpreting relevant health laws.
(iv)  Assess emerging trends in social data, scientific approaches to bioethics, and related legal developments on a global scale.
