Rationale


The Principles of Sociology course is crucial for understanding human societies and interactions, fostering critical thinking and comprehension of social complexities. By exploring diverse sociological concepts, students gain analytical skills and engage actively in society studies. Ultimately, the course equips students to navigate and participate effectively in society.

The aim of this course is to enhance the students' critical thinking skills and analytical tools necessary to apply theoretical thinking to empirical reality for their active engagement in society.

 

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Outline basic sociological concepts.    
(ii)   Analyse social situations using these concepts. 
(iii)  Outline the basic principles of the mainstream sociological traditions (functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, rational choice theory).
(iv)  Apply theoretical thinking to empirical reality.
(v)  Evaluate common knowledge and perceptions about current social issues.
