Rationale


This course focuses on developing students understanding and knowledge of psychology as it is applied to the workplace. The course is considered essential for the programme as it examines the methods for job analysis and job design as well as the selection and recruitment methods used by organisational psychologists. The wider aspects of Managerial Psychology are also discussed, covering topics such as workplace issues and problems, psychology of the personnel, with emphasis on the effect of stress on employee health and the importance of employee motivation. 

The aim of this course is to explore the theoretical approaches and models of human behaviour in the working environment. It will also draw on the empirical research in regards to the application of psychology in the workplace with a focus on the significance and the benefits of workplace counselling.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Analyse the main characteristics and the importance of occupational psychology.
(ii)   Assess the benefits of workplace counselling for both the organisation and the employees. 
(iii)  Apply theories and methods used by organisational psychologists for job analysis and job design.
(iv)  Evaluate the selection and recruitment methods used by organisational psychologists.
(v)   Identify the main theories and the motivational techniques used by organisational psychologists.
(vi)  Evaluate methods of stress management.
