Course Title: Business Data Communication and Security

Course Code: UU-MBA-741-ZM

Programme: Master of Business Administration - Management Information Systems

Credits: 25.00

Course Description:

Rationale

This course enables students to develop computer networking knowledge, including the existing connectivity technologies and the required infrastructure which comprises the key steps involved in the communication process. Students will develop and evaluate network security protocols in organisational units and acquire basic knowledge of different aspects of network security paradigms while demonstrating the balance of the managerial and technical aspects of network security.

The course aims to familiarise students with key issues for the realisation of the network architectures, the basic protocols involved in wired/wireless communication and the connections between network performance concepts and traffic issues for Quality of Service in broadband communication

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be expected to:
(i)    Identify the requirements hosted in communication protocols and give an overview of data communication standards.
(ii)   Describe computer networks in terms of connectivity, mobility and explain the role of metrics.
(iii)  Identify the design principles of wired and wireless communication networks.
(iv)  Develop models and explain the structural performance for some commonly used network architectures, including LAN and WAN.
(v)   Link different network performance concepts and traffic issues for Quality of Service (QoS) in broadband communication as well as link the above concepts with the network economics of the enterprise.
(vi)  List the fundamentals of cryptography and explain current network authentication applications, PKI, Web security and their vulnerabilities.
(vii) Discuss the security needs of a small enterprise, design a strategic plan to address those security requirements, and select the appropriate tools to implement the organisational policies.
