Course Description:
The rationale behind every module is to offer the student all possible knowledge in each module of the course, in order to be able to deepen their understanding and render them capable of practically applying it. Principles of Sociology introduces students to the sociological study ofsociety though promotion of knowledge and understanding of central concepts, application of social theory, use of scientific evidence and promotion of critical evaluation of common knowledge and perceptions about various socialsituations, found in the university and working environment as well.
Define basic sociological concepts
Conceptualize social situations using these concepts
Outline the basic principles of the mainstream sociological traditions (functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, rational choice theory)
Apply theoretical thinking to empirical reality
Use empirical evidence in favor or against theoretical explanations
Critically evaluate common knowledge and perceptions about current social issues
