Rationale


The course Accounting Information Systems plays a pivotal role to this programme as it empowers students to cultivate knowledge and comprehension of information systems and their application in accounting settings. Providing a broad overview of the functions utilised in a Computerised Accounting System and highlighting their importance in modern accounting practices, the course equips students to handle accounting tasks more efficiently and effectively in their future roles.
This course aims to assist students with decision-making and problem-solving through the use of information systems as well as develop the required skills in applying accounting concepts and standards using computer programming.

 

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)     Record the main types of commercial transactions accurately and in appropriate form. 
(ii)    Design reports on commercial relationships in a form that facilitates management action and control. 
(iii)   Outline the connections between income generation and resource usage. 
(iv)   Illustrate the context and practical application of a computerised accounting system and analyse why computer technology is important to accounting information systems.
(v)    Input data to a computerised accounting system in order to produce final accounts and other reports. 
(vi)   Apply tools of Accounting Information Systems such as diagrams, and flowcharting. 
(vii)  Evaluate the role of accounting information systems in decision making and problem solving.
(viii) Evaluate and apply internal control systems including techniques used to prevent fraud.
