Rationale

Cyber Security is one of the most challenging issues of our time. With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated and pervasive, there is an urgent need to bolster future web developers’ security skills. Through this course, students will gain a variety of advanced intellectual and transferable skills that will equip them with the ability to specify, design, implement and test more secure computer-based systems as well as deploy effectively the tools used for the construction and documentation of software.

This course aims to provide students with the ins and outs of computer and web-based security which will help them understand how to build and write code for websites that are safe, secure and up-to-date with modern security standards.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)    Assess computer systems and networks to identify security vulnerabilities.
(ii)   Design effective countermeasures to mitigate security risks.
(iii)  Apply principles of cryptography, malware defence, intrusion detection, and secure system development to protect information, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of data. 
(iv)  Evaluate the legal, social, cultural and ethical considerations inherent in cybersecurity, with a particular focus on compliance, forensic analysis, and ethical hacking.
